A permutation is just a way to arrange thing in a certain order. For example, the letters a and b can be permuted as ab and ba. Note there are two letters and 2 permutations. Think of it this way, There are two letters so 2 choices for the first letter and one choice for the second. So 2x1 is 2 If we had a,b and c There would be 3 choices for the first letter, it could be a or b or c, and once one of those is used, two choices for the second and then the last letter is the one left over. So there are 3x2x1=6 permutations. In general if we have n objects, there are nxn-1xn-2....3x2x1 which we write as n!.
