One way is to:

• Collect a few parameters, so that you know the possible lowest number and the possible highest number.
• Add variables that will affect the numbers one way or the other, then adjust the range: your low and high numbers can change.
• Look at history, to see if there are patterns or estimates there.
• Label your estimates as estimates, and document your logic in arriving at the number.
