In order to take a fraction away from a fraction if they are of the same denominator then this is simple i.e. 3/4 - 2/4 equals 1/4 but in the case of fractions where the denominator is not the same then you must find the lowest common denominator, so 3/4 -1/8 would be equal to 6/8 -1/8 equalling 5/8. In the case of mixed fractions as in 1 and 1/4 - 1/16 we must not only find the lowest common denominator we must change 1 and 1/4 into something where the numerators can be subtracted from each other. Therefore we make the 1 being a whole number into a fraction and add the 1/4. This would be 4/4+ 1/4 equalling 5/4 (or 1 and 1/4) and then turn both the 5/4 and 1/16 into the lowest common denominator which in this case is 16 so 5/4 is equal to 20/16. So 20/16 -1/16 equals 19/16 which is equal to 1 and 3/16. This can be shortened by making it 1 and 5/16 -1/16 but some people may get confused by the one and the easiest way sometimes the longest.it is important to remember though that if the whole number is greater than one and you only use a single whole number to make the fraction workable....there will be whole numbers left. for example 3 and 1/4 and you need to make it 5/4 the number will go from 3 and 1/4 to 2 and 5/4 having only converted one whole number into a fraction or in this case 4/4.
