Write the number with the decimal point after the first non-zero digit (7) followed by the other digits except trailing zeros which are not written followed by multiplying it by 10 to some power; the power to use is the number of digits the decimal point has to move to get back to where it was in the original number (if it is not written it is "hiding" after the last digit - 0 in this case) - if it has to move to the left make the power negative. To get from after the 7 to after the 0 the decimal point has to move 2 digits to the right, thus the power of 10 is [positive] 2, giving:

720 = 7.2×10²
