well you would pick up your writing utensil, then draw an equation with a variable AND either a plus or a minus sign. now thats how its done.

You can add or subtract like variables just as you would with normal numbers . Like variables means they must be the same so you can add an x with an x but cannot add a x to a y

For example

5x+2x=7x

4x+3y+12x= 16x+3y

4x-2x-y=2x-y

7x-3x-1x-2x= x or 1x

9x+3x -2y+8y= 12x+6y

2x+3x+4y-y+2x-3y=7x
