Here are just a few examples: (*) You want to paint a large room in your house. The gallon-size paint can says that it covers 150 square feet. Your room is 20 feet by 30 feet and has a ten-foot-high ceiling. How many gallons do you need? (*) You go to a furniture store and see a couch that you like. It is priced at $1,123.00, but it also has a red tag stating that it is on sale for 35% off. How much does it cost? You don't have a calculator with you, and all of the sales people are busy, but you do have a pen and some scratch paper with you. (*) You are cooking a holiday dinner for a bazillion people. The huge turkey weighs X number of pounds. The label says to cook it 20 minutes per pound. How long do you cook it? (*) Here's one that I actually used! You're building a gazebo not from a kit, but from an actual blueprint. It has roof joists that fit into a ring at the top, but they must be placed into the ring at exactly the right angle (angle X), or they will crack. You will use a temporary center support post, and jack it up to exactly the right height. But how high? You know the height of the columns, but not the distance in the center of the joists. Studying the blueprint, you see that the joists form a perfect triangle. Use trigonometry to calculate the length of the side opposite angle X. and add it onto the height of the columns to get your total height. These are just a few examples of how math is useful in everyday life! I think that math is fun, and can't understand why so many people hate it!
