An average apple weighs 3.5 ounces which is roughly 100 grams. So you could approximate that there is roughly 10 apples in a Kilogram. (100 grams/apple x 10 apples = 1000 grams or 1 Kilogram).
Around 8-10. Fewer if they are large ones like cookers.
Because it is smaller in volume.
Some apples I purchased recently were $NZ3.65 (around $US 2.90) for 6 apples that weighed approx 1kg. This was in 'medium price' supermarket.
1kg of pure water would take up 1000 mililitres.
Because it would be a lot smaller.and also feathers weigh les so that would be more feathers you would have to carry.; )

I think it used to come from the comparison of the time of labour needed to extract gold and the time needed to produce or attain other commodities. So if 1 hour of mining would extract 5 grams of gold and if 1 hour of cultivating apple trees would give 1kg of apples then 5 grams of gold could buy 1kg of apples. The question is where does the value of money come from nowadays!
It costs $1.50 where I come from
about 2200mg, 1kg=1000mg, 1kg=2.2lbs
Unit conversion: The general idea is to multiply the given value by 1. 1kg (kilo= 1000) is 1000g so 1kg/1000g = 1 846g X 1kg/1000 g = 0.846kg
