many mathematical answers to this question (see wikipedia) but in simplistic terms define cylinder. if the edge of each surface defines a 'Face' the standard answer as used in such quizz games as "Are You Smarter Than a 10 Year Old" would be 3, but if we take the description to apply to a hollow sphere the answer would be 6, there being inside faces as well as outside. Haven't yet found this answer anywhere yet. But a cylinder has got 3 faces.
The idea of the hollow sphere does not lead to 6 surfaces as 2 of them are the same in the cases of inside and outside, i.e. the end edges, so 4 would be the correct answer for a hollow sphere.
