English-speaking contries are now officially on the "short scale" used in the US, which defines 1 trillion pounds as 1 x 1012, which has 12 zeroes.

*Other parts of the world use the "long scale" which assigns number names by millions, not by thousands, and in those areas a trillion has 18 zeroes.
What do you mean by "English" trillion?

Up until 1974, England used the long scale based on powers of a million (and was taught in schools, colleges, etc), so a trillion was (106)3 = 1018 so it had 18 zeros.

Since 1974, England has used the short scale based on powers of a thousand plus one (for official figures and is now taught in schools, colleges, etc), so a trillion is (103)3+1 = 1012 so it has 12 zeros.
