He is often wrongly used to illustrate the stupidity of powerful people - like kings - who think they can do anything.

It would seem that Canute's intention was the exact opposite. He wanted to demonstrate to his courtiers that, powerful though he was, there were things in nature that were far more powerful. He could issue royal commands to the sea not to come in but the sea would not bow to him.
