The first non-zero digit in the division of 2.682 ÷ 4 would be placed in the tenths place.

When using long division to do the division, to get the decimal point in the correct place, before doing ANY division, write a decimal point in the quotient above the decimal point in the dividend; now do the division ignoring the decimal points.

4 doesn't divide into 2 so nothing, or a zero, is written above the 2 (in the ones place).

4 does divide into 26; it goes 6 times, so the six is written above the 6 (in the tenths place), 4×6 = 24 is written under 26 and the subtraction done to get 2 onto which the 8 is brought down to create 28 and the division continues.

18.88/4 = 4.72 and the first digit is in the ones place

Explain why estimating before you divide helps you place the first digit in the quotient?

You can use estimation and place value to help you figure out where to place the first digit.

How you can tell before you divide 425 by 9 that the first digit of the quotient is in the ten place?

425 is less than 100*9 = 900 so the first digit of the quotient cannot be in the hundreds (or higher) place. 425 is greater than (or equal to) 10*9 = 90 so the first digit of the quotient cannot be in the units (or lower) place. That only leaves the tens place.

Why dividing a three digit number by one digit number the first digit of the quotient is in the tens place?

It does not have to be. 864/2 = 432. The first digit of the quotient is not in the tens place.

How can you tell before you divide 3972 by 41 that the first digit of the quotient is in the tens place?

41)3972...since 41>39 you won't have the first digit of the quotient in the hundreds place. it will be in the tens place instead. if the first two digits were 41 or greater then you would. hope that helps.

In what place is the first digit of the quotient for 18.88 4?

If you mean 18.88 divided by 4 then the quotient is 4.72 and the first digit of 4 is in the ones or units place

When you divide 459 by 8 how does estimation tell you where to place the first digit in the quotient?

You know that 8 x 50 is 400 and 8 x 60 is 480. The quotient will be between 50 and 60.

How can you tel before you divide 425 by 9 that the first digit of the quotient is in the tens place?

Because 4 is less than 9. There is no way for it to divide evenly and that's to divide by 9. Think about it. The only way to get a number in the thousands place is to have a 9 as the first number (assuming it's still a three digit number)
