Your equations are then x+y = 3
and
xy = -40

Subtracting y from both sides of the first equation we get
x = 3 - y

Substituting this into the second equation we get
xy = -40
(3-y)y = -40

Expanding this we get
-y^2 + 3y = -40

Add 40 to both sides, and multiply by -1 to get
y^2 - 3y - 40 = 0

Factor this to
(y-8)(y+5) = 0

So the zeroes are at y = 8 and y = -5
which means x = -5 and x = 8
