One third (1/3) is not more than three eights (3/8). You have to get the same denominator (the second number) in both fractions. In this case you should multiply the first with 8, and the second with 3. When you multiply a fraction you multiply both numbers in the fraction. That will look something like this:

1 x 8 = 8

------ = ---

3 x 8 = 24

3 x 3 = 9

------ = ---

8 x 3 = 24

Now you'll have two fractions with the same denominator, 8/24 and 9/24, and now it's easy to see that 9/24 is greater than 8/24.

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?
