In showing my work:

3(x) - 21 = 3 is the equation setting up the problem.

Then you want to isolate (x) on one side of the equation.

To do so you first have to eliminate the 21 from the left side by adding 21 to each side.

3(x) - 21 + 21 = 3 + 21. Therefore, 3(x) = 24.

Now in order to solely isolate (x), you must divide each side by 3.

3(x)/3 = 24/3. Therefore, x = 8. That is your answer.
