Suppose the number is x

Then x - sqrt(2x) = 4

x - 4 = sqrt(2x)

Squaring both sides: x2 - 8x + 16 = 2x

So that x2 - 10x + 16 = 0

Factorising: (x - 2)(x - 8) = 0

So x = 2 or x = 8.

Remember that sqrt(4) can also be -2.
