Because of grave robbers, and also there was a silly old legend people made up a long time ago. There was a 6 year old child named Eliza that had died from an unusual disease she always had something to do with the number six. One day they were digging up her grave and they heard her speak to them "6 feet deep not the big not that small from now on 6 feet deep" from then on they believed you had to dig it 6 feet deep. Of course I don't believe that but there are a lot of bugs that can eat away at graves and also grave robbers that might try to rob precious jewels so it would take them longer to dig it up and hopefully while they are digging they get caught.
