The absolute value of a number is the number without the effect of its sign. It can be represented by putting a vertical line either side of the number.

e.g.

|5-8| = 3

|-2| = 2

the general rule for this is:

|a| = sqrt(a^2)

This is because when you square any number, the result is ALWAYS positive. 0^2 = 0 though.
