A ruler is an instrument for measurement used for:

  • drawing a straight line
  • making a technical drawing
  • drawing margin in a book
  • marking off measurements in fractions of an inch (1/8th) up to 12-inches
  • helping to connect two straight lines
  • measuring height, length, or width

Rulers can be used at / in:

  • the home
  • school (grade school, high school, college)
  • any profession / at work
  • math and geometry
  • sewing / quilt making
  • any situation to measure space, such as to know whether a desk will fit in the corner of a room
  • in law --- Title Searchers often have to draw the area of a piece of land.
  • Surveyors - to draw an area of land

In the past, teachers would also use rulers to slap across the knuckles of misbehaving students.
