A standard chorus consists of four voice parts, two female and two male. The highest of the female voices sing soprano and the lowest sing alto. The highest male voices sing tenor and the lowest sing bass. On a piece of music this is designated on the front as SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). The parts will often divide into 1 and 2. The voices singing the 1 part sing the higher within the range of their voice range. For example, when The Sopranos split into 2 parts, the women with the highest range sing 1 and the ones with lower voices sing 2. Bass 2 is the lowest when the choir splits. Pieces can be voiced in many ways, meaning that you could have a piece for SSAATTBB, SSAA, SAA, TB, TTBB, TBB, and any other combination the composer wishes to choose.
