When your input variable causes your denominator to equal zero.
* * * * *
A rational function of a variable, x is of the form f(x)/g(x), the ratio of two functions of x.
Suppose g(x) has a zero at x = x0. That is, g(x0) = 0. If f(x0) is not also equal to 0 then at x = x0 the rational function would involve division by 0. But division by 0 is not defined. Depending on whether the signs of f(x) and g(x) are the same or different, as x approaches x0 the ratio become increasingly large, or small. These "infinitely" large or small values are the asymptotes of the rational function at x = x0.
If f(x0) = 0, you may or may not have an asymptote - depending on the first derivatives of the two functions.
Leuconychia is evident as white lines or spots in the nail plate and may be caused by tiny bubbles of air that are trapped in the nail plate layers due to trauma. This condition may be hereditary and no treatment is required as the spots will grow out with the nail plate. It also means your nails aren't hard enough.

The horizontal and vertical amplifier in the cathode-ray oscilloscope are deflection plates. The horizontal amplifier causes the beam to be deflected horizontally at a rate that is uniform. The vertical amplifier causes the beam to deflect vertically.

The wording is confusing, as a quadratic function is normally a function of one variable. If you mean the graph of y = f(x) where f is a quadratic function, then changes to the variable y will do some of those things. The transformation y --> -y will reflect the graph about the x-axis. The transformation y --> Ay (where A is real number) will cause the graph to stretch or shrink vertically. The transformation y --> y+A will translate it up or down.
