take away or subtract by 2/3, which would be under half of the original.

For example... If you start with 18 and you reduce by 2/3 you end up with 6.

18 x 2 / 3 = 6.

This is very confusing. 2/3 is not under half the original. 1/3 is what is left behind which is less than half the original. Also 18 x 2/3 is not 6. It is two thirds of 18, and since one third is 6, two thirds is 12. So reduce by two thirds means take away 12 leaving 6. The general thing is to "multiply by" or "divide by", but simply "add" or "subtract", which I think is why this confusion has come about.
