It is a variable in your experiment that you didn't realize was influencing your results.

For example, let's say I am conducting an experiment about the effects of hormones on seed germination. I place my seeds in a windowsill, expecting the only variable to be the hormones. But if the angle of the window causes some of the seeds to receive 5 hours of light per day, and others to receive only 3, light is an unintended variable. It will influence my results, and could lead me to make a conclusion about the hormone effectiveness actually caused by light differences.

Hope this helped!!
