Historically, girls and boys seem about even in mathematical aptitude and achievement until high school, when the girls seem to begin to lose ground. This trend seems to be changing, however, as more and more girls aspire to attend university at the same time that fewer guys are attending college. Further, although the difference in average math aptitude and achievement between men and women is generally very small, men demonstrate a much wider range of aptitude, which explains why there are proportionately more men among the elite ranks of academe and why there are far more male geniuses than female. (Basically what this means is there are more male math geniuses than female and more male idiots than female.)
