44 x 60 = (40 x 60) + (4 x 60) = 2400 + 240 = 2640
Fabric tablecloths can be expensive, and vinyl tablecloths lack elegance and can slide off of the table. If you know how to hand-sew a running stitch or work a simple sewing machine, you can make a unique tablecloth for any size table. First, measure your table. Add 20 inches to each measurement. If your table is 24x40 inches, for example, you will need fabric that is 44x60 inches. Go to the fabric store and choose a print for your tablecloth. Purchase any light- or medium-weight machine-washable fabric. While 100 percent cotton is softer, fabric with some polyester included will stay wrinkle-free and won’t need to be ironed after a tumble in the dryer. Most fabric sold on bolts is about 45 inches wide; if the shortest end of your table is longer than 22 inches, be sure to choose fabric that comes in wider sizes to avoid needing a seam in the middle of your tablecloth. When you get home, wash and dry your fabric. If you have chosen a bright color, be sure to wash it in cold water to avoid bleeding and running. Trim the fabric to the desired length and width. Cut the selvage end off of your fabric and hand-stich a 1/4 to 1/2 inch hem on each edge of your tablecloth. Remove the wrinkles from your tablecloth by ironing the fabric or putting it in the dryer for a few minutes on high heat, then lay the tablecloth on your table. If desired, add placemats or a store-bought runner. Place a vase filled with flowers in the center of the table, or use a centerpiece made out of candles or a topiary. Make several tablecloths out of various fabrics to use at different points of the year. After major holidays, seasonal fabrics often go on sale, making this a thrifty alternative to purchased tablecloths. Make matching cloth napkins out of the same or complementary fabric for custom-made decor.
