You would add 9.99 + 9.99 = 19.98, will be the amount to figure the tax on. Tax rates are usually expressed as a percentage of the total. For example if the rate is 6 1/4 %, then multiply the total sale by 0.0625 to find the amount of tax, then add this for the total amount with tax. In my example: 19.98 * 0.0625 = 1.24875, which rounds to 1.25. So you would add the 1.25 tax to 19.98 = 21.23
