The actual definition of Addition is when you total the amount of objects you have in your possession. So when you take the addition of one thing to another, you have x + y.

x, being the one thing, y being another. In simple terms. If Another and One Thing are the same object, then you could also say this... x + x = 2x. Meaning, you have two of those things in your possession.
