A universal product code is a 12 digit number that is used to identify any item that is for sale. It contains a bar code which relates to specific numbers depending on the width of the bars.

UPCs are available on most manufactured items and many if not all foods.

UPCs can be identified according to the manufacturer of the product.

UPCs can be zero suppressed, or condensed into 8 digits. This is for small labeled items such as canned fish and infant foods.

UPCs are different in the US than in Europe. In Europe, 13 digits are preferred.

What I would like to know is how long they are good for.
