The Mayans based on the 20 number system because of 10 fingers and 10 toes. The Mayan number was very useful to the Mayans in the past. Today, they use the modern number system we use today.

In the decimal system, each place-value position is worth 10 times the position to the right. A base-20 numbering system works the same, but with a factor of 20. Note that this would require 20 different digits or other symbols.

It is a system in which all numbers up to and including 19 are represented by a single digit. 20 would be the first double-digit number. An example of how to represent the first 40 numbers could look like this: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,1a,1b,1c,1d,1e,1f,1g,1h,1i,1j,20.

In this system, a= our number 10, b= our 11, etc., 10= our 20, etc., 19= our 29, 1a= our 30, and 20= our 40. Our 200 would be the first 3-digit number, and would be written as 100.

It is a number system in which you count in twenties (or scores). Remnants of the system can still be found in the French numbers from 60 to 100.
