A compass
A compass (properly referred to as 'a pair of compasses') is the two-legged tool which which has a sharp point on one leg and a place to hold a pencil on the other leg. The pointed leg is used as the centre of a circle or arc.
An arc is a portion of the circumference of a circle, and the circumference of a circle is the distance round a circle. So an arc looks like a semicircle, it is part of the circumference. Arcs are often used in constructions, for example if you were asked to draw an angle of 60 degrees without a protractor you would draw arcs following a special method. Arcs are drawn using a tool called a pair of compasses.

If available, a protractor or a right drawing triangle can be used. If restricted to ruler and compass, a right angle can also be constructed to a given line segment by drawing a circle, with a radius less than the length of the line segment but more than half that length, with each end of the line segment as a center and connecting the two points of intersection of the two circles above and below the line. The line connecting to two intersections of these circles will form as right angle to the line segment.

A geometric compass is an instrument, or a tool, used in plane geometry to draw arcs and circles. Not to be confused with the geometric and military compass invented by Galileo.
