It is a metric measure of distance. It is usually written as 'kilometre';(km).

The distance is about ~ 5/8 or 2/3 of one mile.

NB

'Kilo' is from Latin aand means 'thousand'.

'Metre' is also from Latin and means 'measure' #

So 'kilometre' means ' a thousand measures', but in modern terms it is the distance given above.
