pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is an example which most students of mathematics will get to quite early in their education. Euler's number, e = 2.71828 (approx), the base of natural logarithms is probably as important to calculus as pi is to geometry but most students will come across it at a more advanced level.
