Well, what is half of 3? (1 1/2, but put the whole 1 to the side for now, we'll need it again at the end)

What is half of 3/4? (first, multiply the denominator and the numerator by 2) you get 6/8. (3 x 2 = 6, 4x 2 = 8)

Divide the numerator by 2 = 3/8 (6 / 2 = 3)

Next, find the common denominator of 1/2 and 3/8: multiply both the top and the bottom of 1/2 by 4: you get 4/8. (Why? because whatever you do to the bottom, you have to do to the top!)

Now, add 4/8 (from the 1/2) and 3/8 (from half of the 3/4): you get 7/8

Now, you are left with the 1 from the first line where we divided 3 by 2 (we already dealt with the leftover 1/2) Add this to your fraction.

You are left with 1 7/8 (1 + 7/8)

This may be a round-about way of finding the answer, but it works in a pinch!
