To work out 1/5 + 1/6, the denominators (bottom numbers) must first be made the same.

It easiest to do this by multiplying the fraction by the denominator of the other fraction so:

1/5 x 6 = 6/30 (Both the top and the bottom numbers must be multiplied)

1/6 x 5 = 5/30

When the bottom numbers are the same, the fraction are then added. (ONLY THE TOP NUMBERS ARE ADDED. THE BOTTOM NUMBER REMAINS THE SAME)

6/30 + 5/30 = 11/30.

The final answer is 11/30.
