A land mass that's completely surrounded by water is the general definition of an island. Australia isn't included in that definition. For it's large enough to be considered a continent. Therefore, the four largest islands are Greenland, at 2,130,800 sq km/822, 706 sq mi; New Guinea, 785,753 sq km/303,381 sq mi; Borneo, 748,168 sq km/288,869 sq mi; and Madagascar, 587,713 sq km/226,917 sq mi.
