to solve 45 + 32 the students do this: For example: 45 "breaks into" 40 + 5 Similarly 32 "breaks into" 30 + 2 Students then add the tens 40 + 30 = 70

and then add the ones 5 + 2 = 7 and then add the two sums together 77 ...... 45 + 32 = 77
