There are many ways to find the gcf. You can factor the number into primes and take the smallest, i.e. the common powers of those primes. Note that 7 is a factor of 42 since 7x6-42 and 7x14=98 so it is a common factor. So is 2

We could factor 42 as 7x2x3 and 98 as 7x7x2. From this we see the 2 and 7 are common factors but 7x7 is not.

The gcf is 14 (294 is the LCM by the way)
The GCF is 14.
