The next number is eight.
If you look at the differences between the numbers, you can see that two different operations are being done. The first operation is to add a certain amount, and the next operation is to divide by that same amount. The amount used is then incremented by one, and the process repeated.

42 / 2 = 21
21 + 3 = 24
24 / 3 = 8
8 + 4 = 12
