Chapter one

Rachel Marsh is an indentured servant in Boston. She is out with her friend Jane and a little girl named Nabby. They are out to see a lion at the wharf; it was taken from Africa. Rachel talks about her friend and how she always sassy and very sure of herself. Rachel has noticed that look on all the other people of Boston also. She asks Jane why. Jane says that there is going to be a rebellion, and Rachel has to choose a side, the Crown or the Patriots. Rachel doesn't want to choose a side and says so. Then she starts to think about the household she is tied to. The man, Mr. Adams, doesn't go to riot meetings. Jane asks Rachel what she wants, and she responds that she wants her own place and she doesn't want anybody to treat her like her uncle treated her mother. They see the lion. Rachel figures out there is some riot thing going on that day. She takes Nab home.

Chapter 2

A person called Christopher Snider told her about the riot bells. Rachel takes Nab home. She remembers her family back in Braintree. She talks about her father, and her life back in Braintree. Then Mrs. Adams gives her a letter saying her uncle wants to see her the next day. She has bad feelings about it. There is a mob that night and it is very loud. The next morning she goes to her uncle's shop. He says he doesn't import his fabric from England but he does. Then she talks to him. He says he wants information about Mr. Adamses decision about whether to defend Hancock or not. He threatens to tell the Adamses that she is a friend of Jane's, who is friends with a mob leader.
