The standard counting system is called the decimal system.

We count from 0 to 9. When we add 1 to 9 we move across and enter 1 in a second column with 0 in the first column. This indicates that we have 1 x 10 in the second column and 0 x 1 in the first column.

When the number reaches a value that it occupies a third column then this represents the number of hundreds in the number. Moving into the fourth column gives us the number of thousands in the number......and so on.

193 means that this number is 1 x 100 plus 9 x 10 plus 3 x 1.

In other words, 193 = 100 + 90 + 3.

The value of 9 in 193 therefore represents 90.
