Simply set up a systems of equations.

a*b = -12

a + b = 4

According to the second equation, a can also equal 4 - b.

So substitute this into the first equation.

(4 - b) * b = -12

From here, solve for b.

-b(squared) + 4b + 12 = 0 and therefore b(squared) - 4b - 12 = 0.

From here it can simplify to

(b - 6)(b + 2) = 0.
