He didn't have a job. He was a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. He founded a Pythagorean School to teach others all that he had learned during his life, as he had traveled to many countries of the world becoming arguably the most educated person in the world at that time. Back then during 600-500 BC things worked much differently.
