Because the denominator does not express a value, only the size of the parts being added or subtracted. You can think of integers as fractions with a denominator of 1. At any rate, 1/3 plus 1/3 = 2/3, as you can see with any sliced Pizza.

When you multiply fractions, the denominator is telling you to change the size of those parts, so that 1/2 of 1/3 is 1/6.

Why doesnt the denominator change when you find the difference between to fractions?

the best way i can answer that question is this: whats 2+1? it's 3. really, 2=2/1, and 1= 1/1. the denominatior doesn't change there either, because they're the same. the only time a denominator changes in fractions is when the denominators are different. (i.e. 2/3 + 3/5= 19/15. [in this case, you have to multiply the 2 on the top of 2/3 with the 5 on the bottom of 3/5. then you have to multiply the 3 on the bottom of 2/3 with the 3 on the top of the 3/5. the product of the 2 numbers are ther numerator; on top. the multiply the 3 and the 5 on the bottom of the fractions: the product of those numbers are the denominator: what go on the bottom of the fraction. 2x5=10, and 3x3=9. 10+9=19 (goes on top). then, 3x5-15 (goes on bottom.) the answer would be 19/15. i hope that answers your question.

Is it acceptable to express parts of a pound in decimal form or should one use only fractions?

Yes it is acceptable unless it reads express in fractions. But most times it would be a decimal. When you step on a scale it doesnt tell you that you read 1353/4 It tells you you read 135.75 pounds

What property states that adding zero doesnt change the number?

Zero is the additive identity.

Why is there no commutative property for subtraction or division?

There is no commutative property in subtraction or division because the order of the numbers cannot be change. This means that when multiplying or adding it does not matter the order of the numbers because the answer comes out the same.
