Out of nearly 400 times this question had been asked, all except ONE were some version of the question posted:

In usual mathematics of simply adding 2 numbers, these are the only ways to reach a sum of 17:

  • 1 plus 16
  • 2 plus 15
  • 3 plus 14
  • 4 plus 13
  • 5 plus 12
  • 6 plus 11
  • 7 plus 10
  • 8 plus 9 / 9 plus 8

Based on usual mathematics of adding, the answer is none of the two numbers given add up to 17. Remember, the question limit us just to choosing two numbers from the list given. It did NOT ask us to do anything more than add 2 numbers to reach 17.

6+13=19

6+2=8

6+12=18

6+7=13

6+14=20

13+2=15 there are no combinations that make 17 from

13+12=25

13+7=20 impossible to make 17 using those numbers!

13+14=27 13+2=15

13+12=25

13+7=20

13+14=27

2+12=14

2+7=9

2+14=16 (closest)

12+7=19

12+14=26

TRICKY REPLYIf this is one of those kinda let's get tricky questions.... Then I have to say yes... Afaik!

Ok here is the solution....

The question is limiting you to just 1 mathematical equation but wait the question is not limiting you in any single another way...

So you can trick it a little,

First of all the list was this 6 + (-7) + (-13) + (-2) + (-12) + (-14), you got it ?

Second ... Was the question said you can not sort them by their values, no it didn't say that ... So:

We do it :

(-2) + 6 + (-7) +(-12) + (-13) + (-14).

Ok now we are ready to trick some more...

Let's do a little mathematical act : (-2) + 6 - ( 7 + 12 + 13 + 14 ).

And now that we got the right list, we can get back to question that said just two of the following number have to add up to 17.

So... The solution is this :

(-2) + 6 - ( a number that made from just adding two of the numbers in this parentheses , which if you decrease it by 4 which is the result of a simple calculation before the parentheses you will have 17? )

It simple now... Isn't it ?

(-2) + 6 - ( 7 + 12 + 13 + 14 ) we choose just two numbers like I said and that would be

14 and 7 which equals 21 and then as mathematics rules us we have to decrease it by

4 which is a sum of (-2) and 6. I think it's solved.

And the fact that it's a tricky question which needs an even more tricky answer.

And another fact that the question is not limiting us to not a single thing besides the one I already said.

Given the choices of numbers, these would be False: 6-13=-7

7+2=-9

-9-12=-21

-21-7=-28

-28-14=-42

This only applies to multiplication. Even though we're are adding, it still doesn't work.

I will say that true because 6 - 2 = 4

And 4+13 =17
