If the base of the box is 16X14, then the diagonal, d1 of the base is d1 =√(16)2+(14)2=√452=21.26 The diagonal of the box, d2 ,is then d2=√(21.26)2+(12)2=√595.9676=24.41 Whether the flute will fit depends upon is diameter. If the diametert is less than 0.41 inch it should fit.
it depends on if you want to feature the flute then the flute will be the lead or the melody the violin would be the harmony but the cello will always be bass if it was featuring the violin then the violin would be melody the flute will be harmony and the cello still will be bass

The violin is a harder instrument to master than the flute. Both can be beautiful. It is also good to learn a lesser used instrument such as a bassoon or viola.
