12 x 12 = 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12

= 24 + 24 + 24 + 24 + 24 + 24

= 48 + 48 + 48

= 48

+48

+48

-------

= 144

@anonymous. Use the "make ten" strategy. So for 12x12 you first look at it as "10x12" solve that which is 120, and then solve for the part you took off, in this case 2x12 which is 24. Add them together and you get 144.
