That's a common way of numbering houses in England. In many parts of the USA and Canada numbering is different, it's done by blocks. I had cousins living in Vancouver at a four-figure address, but their street only contained 24 houses.
I sell things on eBay. Whenever people buy from the United States, their house number always seems to be something like 3975, Valley Road. I know it's a big country, but surely the roads can't be so long they have thousands of houses? And why does nobody ever live at the lower numbers, like number 4? or number 26?
obviously too complicated for the person that wrote this question. Typically, signs on the road, laws of the road, and other things that would hopefully keep dumbasses off the road, sadly, it fails to work.

The chance of dying in a road crash is 1 in 250 in the UK. Massively higher than in any other mode of transport. Yet we are more likely to worry about being killed on a plane than on the drive to the airport. We feel in control in our vehicles, when we are absolutely subject to a multitude of risks from other road users and the road environment as well as our own immense fallibilities.
the road was so bumpy and rough
As the house numbers are, odd numbers on one side, even numbers on the other side.
In order to deliver mail, carriers needed a way to identify houses from the outside. A simple number system was developed using even numbers on the left side of the street/road and odd numbers on the right side of the street/road. Numbers had to be posted prominently, near the front door (most doors had mail slots back then). Later, fire and police services required large reflective numbers on all houses.
Numbers on each side of the road are separated by a gap of 2, not 4, as one side has even numbers while the other has odd. If another house is built between two numbers, it simply receives a suffixed number such as '24A' or '1839B'.
A street is a narrow road with rows of houses or other buildings on both sides in a town or city.
For the most part all the road signs in the US run even numbers for east and west, odd numbers for north and south.
the real quest is what are you and I'm a human being and your a road without cars and a town but no houses and a forest without trees
