Actually, under Le Système International D'unités or SI units, the symbol for the litre (liter in US) is the lower case l. Therefore the symbol for the millilitre is ml.

Uppercase L represents the latent heat capacity of a substance, and therefore mL has no scientific meaning.

So I suggest you use ml, because it's scientifically correct. However since mL has no meaning I guess you can also use it as the symbol for millitre; thus making mL the hyper-correct symbol for millilitre.
