If you pretend that those hyphens are a triangle, then the diagonal side would be called the hypotenuse, generally named c.

The other 2 sides would be a and b.

Now, his theorem states

a2+b2=c2

This means that:

72+102 is equal to the length of the hypotenuse.

So, 49+100=149. So, c2 is equal to 149. So, root c2 is equal to root 149.

(Then we use our calculators to find the root of 149. He didn't have that step, he had to work it all out)
