Why is pasilyo 8 titled as pasilyo 8?

The title of the story "Pasilyo 8" signifies a place of infinite or unending poverty and consequently, human sufferings. Pasilyo denotes a narrow or constricted passageway, often serving as haven for the poor in our society. These are the poor people who remained poor as time passes by in a society that offers very little opportunity. The numeral eight (8) is like the infinity sign, but standing. Similarly, the people living in the pasilyo are trying to eke out a living in the vain hope that someday, the vicious cycle of poverty will be broken.
