The answer is because 1+1 in base 3+ is 2 but in base 2, 1+1 is 10. This is because when the sum is equal or greater than the base number, you put a 0 and you need to regroup.

Eg: in base 2, 1+1=10 because 1+1=2, so you put a 0 and regroup 1 to make 10.
